ZWELINZIMA VAVI'S PROFILE

o Unionist o Socialist o Politician

Comrade Vavi is a son of a mineworker and a domestic worker and the 10th of the 12 children - 5 boys and 7 sisters. Like many of his countrymen, his first experience with apartheid was at an early age - as a child labourer. He is the General Secretary of the 2 million-strong Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) - a Federation that he has led since 1999 - and, amongst his many positions, serves on the Boards of non-governmental body Corruption Watch and the Industrial Development Corporation, a state-owned corporation responsible for industrialisation. He is also the joint chairperson of the Millennium Labour Council and currently serves on the executive board – including the Africa region – of the International Trade Union Council, the body which represents 160 million workers.

Cde Vavi has been active in student and youth politics since late 1970s. He helped organise both COSATU and Youth Congresses and served as their elected office bearer at the beginning of the 1980s. His association with workers began at this stage even before formal employment. He helped organise workers into South African Allied Workers Union (SAAWU) in his student days.

His first experience of "decent" work was a position he held as a mining clerk in the former Western Transvaal (and now South Africa's North West province). It was there that he became active as a trade unionist, after joining the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), until recently the biggest affiliate. He has held many positions in the trade union movement including being president of the Southern African Trade Union Coordinating Council and serving on the globalisation commission of the International Labour Organisation.

Shortly before the dawn of freedom and democracy in 1994, he was elected to the post of Deputy General Secretary of COSATU. This was after serving the Federation as national organiser and a Regional Secretary of COSATU in the then Western Transvaal or today's North West. He is now serving a third term as General Secretary of COSATU, having been first elected to the position in 1999. His popularity amongst workers in unrivaled - and he is one of the politicians held in high esteem by many South Africans across race and class divides. His passion is to serve the working class.

2014-03-17
In light of the continued misrepresentation about Cde Vavi's illegal suspension and divisions in COSATU, we've decided to publish and circulate this document. The paper sets out the origins of the current paralysis in the Federation which manifests itself through the ongoing vilification of the General Secretary and other progressive forces. We hope the document will elevate the level of engagement which is designed to resolve the paralysis in COSATU.
